Dear Just Jill,

I am considering breast reduction surgery. For as long as I can remember, my boobs have been huge, and I have had it!!

I am so fed up with the constant back and neck pain, the indents in my shoulders from bras, balance issues, and painful chafing from underwire. I love to ramble, and even that bothers me now. I have started wearing two bras for support.

I’m tired of the constant snickering and gawking from immature men. How about clothes shopping? I would love to be able to walk into a store and find a top that fits properly. I am so sick of wearing oversized clothing that is too big everywhere to accommodate my boobs.

If you have had this surgery, I would love to hear from you …pros/cons, things you wish you knew ahead of time, would you do it again, how was your recovery?

I need advice from my wise Sole Sisters.

What’s a gal to do?

Sincerely,

Big Boobs Barb

Sole Sister Advice & Comments

  • I am 59, and I had it done two years ago, and I can only give you pros and absolutely no cons. I just can’t believe I waited this long to do it. I feel better physically and emotionally. The healing was a piece of cake, and everything looks and feels better. The scarring is definitely still there and may never completely fade, but that’s the least of my concerns. The fact that I can wear all types of clothing is amazing, and at the gym, I can skip and do jumping jacks without even thinking about it. I say go for it.

  • Just do it! I did. 8 pounds and 8 inches off my chest. You miss them for the first while, but then you don't even think of them. As for scaring, you have to look for mine to see it now, but it has been a long time. A nice neckline, a pretty dress, a choice of lingerie, finding you like to sleep on your tummy, so many rewards!

  • My closest friend had this surgery a number of years ago. She is much happier… BUT!!!! The initial surgery was botched, despite it being what appeared to be a respectable doctor. Nurses whispered to her to take pictures. It was really bad, and she eventually needed corrective surgery. It worked the second time, and she got compensation. I guess just be really careful when choosing a surgeon.

  • For my friends who have gone through this, it’s a complete game-changer. Take back your life.

  • I've known several people who have had the surgery, and all of them only regret not doing it sooner

  • I just had this done 3 1/2 months ago. So happy I did! So much more comfortable with my appearance and how my clothes fit. My scars are still fading, but they have healed nicely. No regrets for me

  • I did it 2 years ago and am SO glad I did! The one thing I will say is that my male surgeon completely ignored my very clear requests to be very small afterwards, and gave me a small reduction and a lift, but NOT what I asked for. This was only evident afterwards, when his nurse assured me that I "looked great!" and "had to be proportional". I was furious at the time and remain unhappy when I think of it, but even with that, I wear tank tops now instead of the industrial bras I've worn since I was 13, and my shoulders are happy for the first time in decades. Make sure you have a very frank conversation about what size you will be afterwards. I think he did "good work," and many women would be happy with my result, but it's not what I wanted, and it was a very difficult feeling to have my own wishes about the size of my breasts be completely ignored by a man who thought he knew better, while I was naked and unconscious and unable to advocate for myself. I have heard that I'm not the only woman who has had something like this happen, so make sure you are clear about what you want the outcome to be and go for it! I'm still glad I had it done. The freedom from pain and bras is incredible.

  • Best thing I ever did! I'd lost a lot of weight, and mine were super saggy, and I literally had to fold them into my bra. After the surgery, I couldn't believe the difference.

  • I did it as a preventative measure due to my family history of cancer. I wish that they were smaller. The surgeon was amazing and did a great job. As mine was a removal of all breast tissue and a diep flap reconstruction, he wasn’t focused as much on reduction as reconstruction. I went back for a second tidy-up operation, and some more was removed, but I still wish they were smaller. I don’t want to have a third operation, so will leave well enough alone, but it still disappoints me. You also need to know that the surgery cuts many nerves, so in my case, I have very little feeling. All that said, I am much happier than I was prior to the surgery. I think it is worth it. Good luck.

  • Honestly, my reduction was the best thing ever!

  • I am happy to read that all of you ladies who had this surgery are happy with your results. I wish I could say the same thing. My surgeon made me very tiny, and I am not a tiny woman, and I have no feeling in my nipples at all. Forget about enjoying sex now. I am so sad and depressed because of it. I wish that I had never had this surgery.

I had a reduction at 22, 40 years ago and it is the single best decision I’ve ever made. My daughter had one too at a similar age. Life is too short to be uncomfortable – do it!

I echo what most women said. I wish I had done it sooner! The recovery was initially painful and longer than I thought, but so worth it. I’d do it again in a second. No more underwire bras, no rash, no excess cleavage. Just comfort and ease. I’m a happy girl. 😊

I’m 59 and just had breast reduction surgery on Dec 9. It is AMAZING to no longer feel any pressure on my shoulders and neck. It’s hard to describe how I’m feeling, but suffice it to say I feel like myself for the first time in a long time… or perhaps ever. This is much more than a cosmetic surgery for me, and I’m just beginning to process how I feel. Go for it, you will not regret it! Recovery is pretty quick, but for sure do it when you can take a few weeks for yourself to do nothing but rest and recover 💜

Hi! Good luck with your decision and good for you for considering breast reduction surgery. I did it one year ago last October. Best decision ever! I’m 69 years old, I wish I had it done years ago. I went from a 42G to a 38C. I lost weight also. I’m very active, hiking, swimming and playing pickleball. This has improved my life tremendously. And my new boyfriend thinks they’re beautiful! I feel my surgeon. Did a great job, the scars are hardly visible now.

Like you, tired of the comments and whistles. At University a few students spilled some milk on the floor near where I sat (so funny, not!). Where I lived in the UK the National Health Service would have done it without charge but a waiting list of 1 year or so. I was young and impatient, 22 I think and when the examing surgeon called to offer me a private op (just pay for the private hosp stay) I jumped at it. Little did I know she was trying an experimental surgery on me.I had the reduction, pleased as punch though not as small as I would have liked. Still a generous 34D – but … when the swelling reduced and bandages off, the breasts did not settle well. The rather clump together. Nipples too high, too much weight underneath and she noticed on follow up and kept asking ‘are you okay with it, happy etc’. I said yes as to be honest I hadn’t noticed. So i’ve lived with that for over 40+ years; still better than my inherited buxom frame (small skeleton) but I can’t go braless and I don’t like going into naked sauna type occasions with others. To be honest the scarring doesn’t worry me. So – ensure you have an experienced surgeon – google for references or feedback and no shady fly by night surgeons or travelling abroad to countries where it is cheaper. If something goes wrong your home country will need to rescue you and it may be expensive. Hope that helps but GO FOR IT.
