Jane Witherspoon is a Canadian expat adventurer, yoga instructor and passionate rambler who recently relocated from Panama to Denia, Spain.
While preparing to write this post, I started thinking about my first blog for Sole Sister Ramblers. As many of you know, five middle-aged friends created this community as a passion project in 2021. We wanted to create a platform that speaks to diverse women middle-aged and beyond and what a journey we've had.
There is a belief in many societies that women in mid-life and beyond have less to offer and therefore become invisible. But I think a revolution is happening, and this demographic of women is moving from feeling invisible to feeling invaluable and being seen and heard as we embrace our voices.
Part of our journey at Sole Sister Ramblers has been finding our voices and encouraging others to find theirs. We want to be part of the revolution that creates new social narratives, describing what we're capable of providing, achieving, and creating while empowering us to be our authentic selves.
We want to tell stories about middle age and, beyond that, help women look forward to aging rather than fearing it. Our generation is the most educated, experienced, healthy, and active group of women in history.
And so, when this group started, we wanted to create engaging content for our group members. There was, and still is, a tremendous amount of brainstorming among our five founders during weekly meetings and online chat threads. It was suggested early on that I connect with my experience as a yoga teacher to share empowering and positive weekly messages with powerful intentions for our community.
Never having considered myself verbose when communicating and having no past skills as a writer except creating legal documents in my previous life, the idea sent me into a tailspin. After several weeks of procrastination, which I excel at, and several nudges, the first Mindful Musings was published.
Coming full circle to this post's intention, trusting your journey, the last two years for me have been a journey of discovery. Discovering that I have a voice, I can use it to spread messages of encouragement, positivity, empowerment, love, and support to women going through the similar life changes and challenges as myself.
Here is my first Mindful Musings; I am proud of my initial contribution and how far I have come on my journey.
Sometimes, the most challenging part of any journey is believing you are worthy of the destination. The one where you see that goal, that dream, or what it is that you have always longed for. You are brave enough to face the challenges and strong enough to see it through to the end. Never be afraid to take that first step. Each new step brings you closer to it. Believe it. You can do it." - Bridgette Nicole.
I love this quote. Life is full of challenges and adventures. Many of us are at an age where we embark on new life journeys. Maybe our children are grown and have left home, perhaps we are exploring a move to foreign lands, or maybe retirement is an exciting possibility.
What does your new life journey look like?
And so my Sole Sisters, as you ramble this week remember, this is a time to embrace change and look at all the possibilities that await you.
Be brave.
Be strong.
Take that first step.
