The Journey and Finding Your Voice, Jane's Mindful Musings

Finding Your Voice - Jane's Mindful Musings

Jane Witherspoon is a Canadian expat, adventurous spirit, and dedicated yoga instructor who now calls Dénia, Spain, home. A passionate Rambler at heart, she embraces the richness of life in her new Mediterranean lifestyle.

While preparing to write this post, I found myself thinking back to my very first blog for Sole Sister Ramblers. As many of you know, five middle-aged friends created this community as a passion project in 2021. We wanted to build a platform that speaks to diverse women—midlife and beyond—and what a journey it has been.

There is a belief in many societies that women in midlife and beyond have less to offer and therefore become invisible. I believe, however, that a quiet revolution is underway. This demographic of women is shifting from feeling invisible to feeling invaluable, as we take ownership of our voices and insist on being seen and heard.

Part of our journey at Sole Sister Ramblers has been about finding our voices and encouraging others to find theirs. We want to be part of the movement that reshapes social narratives—ones that reflect what we are capable of providing, achieving, and creating—while empowering women to live as their authentic selves.

We want to tell stories about middle age and beyond, and to help women look forward to aging rather than fearing it. Our generation is the most educated, experienced, healthy, and active group of women in history, and that deserves to be celebrated.

From the very beginning, we were committed to creating engaging, meaningful content for our members. There was—and still is—a tremendous amount of brainstorming among the five founders during weekly meetings and endless online chat threads. Early on, it was suggested that I draw on my experience as a yoga teacher to share empowering, positive weekly messages with strong intentions for our community.

Having never considered myself particularly verbose, and with no writing background beyond legal documents from a previous life, the idea sent me into a tailspin. After several weeks of procrastination (a skill I have perfected) and a few gentle nudges, the first Mindful Musings was finally published. I am proud of that initial contribution, and even more proud of how far I have come since then.

Which brings me full circle to the intention of this post: trusting your journey. The last few years have been a period of discovery for me—discovering that I do have a voice, and that I can use it to share messages of encouragement, positivity, empowerment, love, and support with women navigating similar life changes and challenges.

“Sometimes, the most challenging part of any journey is believing you are worthy of the destination. The one where you see that goal, that dream, or what it is that you have always longed for. You are brave enough to face the challenges and strong enough to see it through to the end. Never be afraid to take that first step. Each new step brings you closer to it. Believe it. You can do it.” – Bridgette Nicole

I love this quote. Life is full of challenges and adventures, and many of us are at an age where we are embarking on new chapters. Maybe our children are grown and have left home. Perhaps we are exploring a move to foreign lands. Maybe retirement is an exciting possibility.

What does your new life journey look like?

And so, my Sole Sisters, as you ramble this week, remember: this is a time to embrace change and look toward all the possibilities that await you.

Be brave.
Be strong.
Take that first step.
