FAQs

Our trips are designed especially for solo travelers, and most women who join do not know anyone else before the journey begins.

To help create an easy, connected group dynamic, we host a pre-trip WhatsApp group where everyone can introduce themselves, share preparation tips, and plan travel logistics—so the experience feels supportive and familiar from the very start.

Tipping is always optional but is a thoughtful way to recognize great service during your travels.

While tipping customs vary from country to country, it is widely appreciated by the local guides, drivers, and service providers who help make your trip enjoyable.

For this trip, we recommend budgeting approximately £25 per person to cover tips for local service providers included in your itinerary. This does not include a tip for your Intrepid group leader.

The group leader may collect this amount to add to a tipping caddy she can use to tip service providers through the adventure to save you the hassle. If there are any funds remaining at the end of the adventure it will be reimbursed.

If you're dining at a restaurant on your own, it's customary to round up the bill or leave a tip of around £1–£2 per person for good service.

If you choose to join an optional excursion with a local guide, a tip of £3–£5 per person is appreciated, although never expected.

Tips for the local Intrepid guide are not included. Intrepid recommends £5–£10 per person, per day. We suggest that the Sole Sister host collect the tips from participants and present them to the guide as a group on the final day.

As always, tip only if you feel the service has been excellent. Tipping should be a gesture of appreciation, not an obligation.

For a typical sightseeing adventure, you don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable spending several hours on your feet throughout the day.

Expect regular walking at an easy, exploring pace, along with some stairs and uneven surfaces.

There will be plenty of breaks to rest, take photos and enjoy where we are, though some days may involve more walking than others.

If you walk regularly at home and can comfortably explore a town or city for a few hours, you will likely feel comfortable.

Luggage transport between hotels is included. On departure days, you’ll leave your bag in the hotel lobby, and it will travel to the next hotel with the group.

When you arrive, you’ll need to take your bag to your room. Some hotels do not have elevators, so please let us know in advance if you need help. Your local guide or the hotel staff can assist. In rare cases, particularly in old towns where the van cannot reach the hotel entrance, you may also need to carry or roll your bag a short distance.

You may bring one main bag weighing no more than 20 kg (44 lb).

You are allowed to bring one bag of any type, provided it weighs less than 20 kgs (44 lbs).

This includes wheeled suitcases, backpacks, or duffle bags.

It has to be one standalone piece. There can't be any extra smaller bags clipped on, tied on, or hanging off it.

In addition to your main bag, you will need a daypack, either a backpack or a waist pack, to carry items you may need while out sightseeing and shopping.

With Intrepid, you’ll experience more than the well-known sights. Your local guide will help you discover places you might otherwise miss, recommend favourite restaurants and experiences, introduce you to local food and traditions, and help with translations when needed.

You’ll travel with Sole Sisters who are all women 45+.

Before you leave, you’ll meet in a dedicated WhatsApp group to ask questions, share plans and get to know one another.

By the time the adventure begins, you’ll already know a few familiar faces—and through the Sole Sister community, you can stay connected long after you return home.

Intrepid and their local guides collaborate with local restaurants and hotels to ensure that travelers enjoy delicious meals showcasing regional cuisines.

Not all meals are included in the trip price, providing maximum flexibility in choosing where, what, and with whom to eat. This arrangement also allows for various budgeting options.

Most nights, the group will dine at a restaurant the guide recommends.

You can find vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free food in Iceland, though the choice may be smaller in rural areas and at stops with only one cafe or restaurant.

Vegetarian options are generally the easiest to find; vegan and gluten-free travellers may need to plan a little further ahead.

Please tell us about your dietary needs before the trip and remind your local guide when you meet.

Your guide can help you ask about ingredients and find suitable meals along the route.

If you have coeliac disease or a serious allergy, tell us that specifically so we can pass on the need to avoid cross-contact.

We also recommend carrying a few snacks you know you can eat, especially on longer travel days.

Most days start between 8:00 and 8:30 am.

This adventure begins and ends in Reykjavík, Iceland.

You’ll travel with a local Intrepid leader and a Sole Sister Ramblers host.

Your Intrepid leader handles the day-to-day details of the adventure, shares their knowledge of the places you visit, recommends local food and experiences, and helps with translations. If plans change or a problem comes up, they’re your first point of contact and will work to resolve it.

Your Sole Sister host is there to represent our community, share in the adventure, and have fun alongside you.

This is an Intrepid Comfort adventure, with stays in comfortable local hotels and guesthouses rather than large resorts.

Rooms are twin share, with two separate beds and ensuite bathroom facilities.

Fly into and out of Keflavík International Airport (KEF), Iceland’s main international airport. It’s about 50 km (31 miles) from Reykjavík, where your adventure begins and ends.

When you book, Intrepid will ask for a deposit and the final balance will be due 70-90 days before departure.

You will have access to a personal Intrepid portal, which you can log in to and pay money off when you feel like it before the final balance is due.

Intrepid will send a payment link, but if you prefer to pay directly to them via an in-person agent, you can choose to do that instead.

Most travelers are required to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses while traveling with Intrepid, including emergency medical treatment and emergency repatriation—getting you home if medically necessary.

For U.S. citizens, the purchase of travel health insurance is not mandatory. If you choose to travel without insurance, you may be required to sign a waiver acknowledging that decision. The tour leader will provide the appropriate form on Day One of your trip.

Trip cancellation insurance is not mandatory, but Intrepid recommends it.Whether you purchase it is entirely up to you.

Intrepid also recommends choosing a policy that covers trip interruption or curtailment, lost or delayed baggage, and personal liability.

Before the trip begins, your Intrepid tour leader will ask to see proof of your insurance policy and your insurer’s 24-hour emergency assistance number.

Intrepid Travel is focused on balancing purpose with profit. In 2018, they formalized this commitment by becoming a certified B Corporation.

Certified B Corporations prioritize their employees, strive for a more inclusive supply chain, and elevate corporate social responsibility. This certification signifies their dedication to creating benefits for everyone.

Intrepid's official pledge is to utilize travel as a force for good in the world.

The following is not included in the price: international flights, required visas, services not mentioned in the itinerary, late check-out at hotels, meals and drinks not mentioned in the itinerary, drinks with included lunches and dinners, tips for leaders, guide and driver, expenditure of personal nature, personal insurance and optional activities.

To travel internationally, you will need a valid passport. Most countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months, so be sure to check its expiry date before your trip.

Intrepid will need your passport information to prepare for your journey, so the details on your booking must match your passport exactly. Please ensure that you provide accurate information.

We also recommend that you carry a copy of the photo page of your passport while traveling and leave an additional copy at home with family or friends.

You are responsible for checking and addressing visa requirements from your country of origin.

Intrepid will share the specific cancellation terms when you book your trip, as these can vary slightly depending on the adventure.

In most cases, a $400 deposit is required at the time of booking, with the remaining balance due 70–90 days before departure.

If something comes up and you need to cancel before making your final payment, that $400 deposit can usually be applied toward another Intrepid adventure — so it doesn’t have to go to waste.

Once full payment has been made, trips are generally non-refundable.

Intrepid is committed to ensuring that all its trips are safe for everyone involved, including travelers, local leaders, and the communities they visit.

Their health and safety policies align with recommendations from the World Health Organization and the World Travel & Tourism Council's Safe Travel protocols for tour operators.

Each itinerary undergoes a thorough risk assessment and audit, and both leaders and suppliers complete extensive health and safety training.
