FAQs
Our trips are designed especially for solo travelers, and most women who join do not know anyone else before the journey begins.
To help create an easy, connected group dynamic, we host a pre-trip WhatsApp group where everyone can introduce themselves, share training and preparation tips, and plan travel logistics—so the experience feels supportive and familiar from the very start.
We travel in private, eight-seater 4WD safari vehicles. Groups of up to six travellers use one vehicle, while groups of seven to twelve use two.
Expect early starts and some long travel days on rough, dusty roads.
Watching the changing landscape and daily village life is part of the experience, but extended periods of sitting may not suit everyone.
The itinerary includes approximate daily distances and driving times to help you decide whether this adventure is right for you.
These conditions can be hard on vehicles.
Although Intrepid’s vehicles are regularly serviced and generally in good condition, occasional breakdowns can happen. Be prepared for some challenging travel days—the rewards are exceptional.
Travel times are approximate and may vary depending on road conditions, weather, and time spent at border crossings. Wet weather may also require alternative routes, adding to travel times.
There will be many very early starts either to make use dawn animal sightings and activities, better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days.
Tipping is customary in many destinations and a welcome way to recognise great service.
Please use clean, undamaged banknotes and avoid coins or very small denominations, which may be considered disrespectful.
We recommend budgeting approximately US$10 per traveller per week for tips to local service providers for activities included in this adventure. This does not include tips for your local guide or crew.
On the first day, your local guide may collect cash for a shared tipping kitty, which they’ll use to tip vendors and local guides throughout the trip, saving you the hassle. Any money left over at the end of the adventure will be returned to you.
If your local guide has provided outstanding service, a tip is greatly appreciated. As a guideline, we recommend US$6–9 per person per day, paid in a currency appropriate for your destination.
The amount is entirely your choice and can reflect the quality of service and how much of the trip they’ve spent with you.
On Sole Sister adventures, your host may collect tip for the Intrepid guide and present them on the final day.
An African safari with Intrepid generally requires a basic level of fitness and mobility.
You do not need any real fitness for this safari besides the ability to get in and out of the 4WD vehicles. Please also note that the roads, particularly in wildlife parks, are in quite poor condition, and you may experience a fair amount of bouncing around.
You should be comfortable climbing in and out of safari vehicles several times a day and spending long periods seated while travelling over bumpy roads in hot, dusty conditions.
The tour includes luggage transportation from one destination to the next.
You will bring your luggage to the van on travel days and carry it from the van to your accommodation.
Not all hotels have elevators; however, if you need assistance with your luggage, our local guide and the accommodation staff will be happy to help.
You are allowed to bring one bag that weighs no more than 20 kgs (44 lbs).
The luggage weight limit is maximum 20kg per person, but we recommend packing as lightly as possible.
Intrepid recommends backpacks or duffel bags, as large framed suitcases can be difficult to fit, especially when the vehicle is at full capacity.

Intrepid travel experiences offer a chance to explore beyond the typical attractions, allowing you to discover hidden gems you might otherwise overlook. Your local guide will recommend the best restaurants and sights on this adventure.
The guide will also introduce you to the unique aspects of Galician food, drink, and cultural traditions, and assist with translations when needed.
It's also comforting to know that all trip participants will be like-minded women close to your age. This commonality means you will likely share many interests and may form lasting friendships. It's also wonderful to know you can stay in touch after your adventure through the Sole Sister Rambler community.
You'll enjoy your adventure with other like-minded women 45+, finding travel companions and friends that will last a lifetime.
Your group leader will be able to suggest restaurants to try during your trip.

There are a number of days on this itinerary where your breakfast or lunch will be a packed picnic meal provided by our lodge or tented camp. Packed meals usually consist of a sandwich, a piece of fruit, a juice, and a snack such as potato chips/crisps, nuts, muffin, or a muesli bar.
This usually happens when we have early morning game drives and want to get into the park by sunrise, are out in National Parks all day, or in some instances, en-route to our next destination when there is little or no alternatives along the way.
Vegetarians and vegans may encounter limited menu options in some areas, particularly outside of the major cities.
Your local guide will be on hand to assist you in finding menu items that meet your dietary restrictions. However, there may be times when individuals with specific dietary needs will need to shop for their own food in local markets.
Vegans and those following a gluten-free diet will need to supplement their meals with items from local markets.
Please inform the booking agent of any dietary restrictions or food allergies before your departure.
This adventure begins and ends in Nairobi.
Hotel Boulevard is 1.4 km from Nairobi’s city centre and 600 metres from Nairobi National Museum. Amenities include a 24-hour front desk, room service, a garden, and complimentary WiFi.
If you’ve pre-booked an airport transfer, look for a representative holding an Intrepid sign with your name in the arrivals terminal. If you can’t find them, call +254 733 523 813 for assistance from Intrepid’s reservations team in Kenya.
If you’re making your own way to the hotel, there is a taxi stand outside the airport building. A taxi should cost approximately US$25–30, payable in Kenyan shillings or US dollars.
You will be accompanied by a local Intrepid tour leader and a Sole Sister Ramblers host.
The local tour leader’s role is to ensure a hassle-free adventure while introducing you to excellent restaurants, sharing insights about the local culture, and acting as a translator when needed. This guide is also responsible for your safety and will serve as an experienced liaison if you encounter any problems.
Intrepid local leaders do more than just show you the destination; they help you connect with the soul of the place. You can expect them to have a broad understanding of the locations visited, including their historical, cultural, religious, and social aspects.
The Sole Sister host will ensure that everyone is having fun and promote a welcoming and inclusive experience, dedicated to our motto: "Everywhere is within Rambling distance with Sole Sisters."
This adventure includes stays in small local hotels, guesthouses, lodges, and permanent tented camps. Accommodation is based on two Ramblers sharing a room with twin beds. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms and essential amenities.
A single-occupancy add-on is available if you’d prefer your own room throughout the adventure.
Properties are asked to have rooms ready for our arrival, but early check-in isn’t always possible. If rooms aren’t ready, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination. Shared day rooms may be available at some properties while we wait.
If you use a sleep apnea machine, please ensure it is battery-operated. Lodges and permanent tented camps often rely on generators that are switched off overnight.
Nairobi’s main international airport is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO).
ATMs are available in most major towns and cities and even some campsites. Withdrawal limits vary between countries, sometimes as low as USD 100 per day, and will differ from your withdrawal limit at home.
Smaller shops and restaurants only accept cash.
Foreign currency is easily changed at exchange bureaus, who generally offer the best rates.
If you are bringing USD cash we strongly recommend large bills in good condition, 2013 series onwards only. Any old or damaged notes may not be accepted.
Credit cards are generally accepted in tourist shops and some restaurants across Africa.
Visa and Mastercard are preferred.
If you're on a multi-country trip, your leader will be able to give you an approximate idea of how much money you may need in each country and help you find well-timed ATMs.
When you book, Intrepid will ask for a deposit and the final balance will be due either 70 or 90 days before departure.
You will have access to a personal Intrepid portal, which you can log in to and pay money off when you feel like it before the final balance is due.
Intrepid will send a payment link, but if you prefer to pay directly to them via an in-person agent, you can choose to do that instead.
Most travelers are required to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses while traveling with Intrepid, including emergency medical treatment and emergency repatriation—getting you home if medically necessary.
For U.S. citizens, the purchase of travel health insurance is not mandatory. If you choose to travel without insurance, you may be required to sign a waiver acknowledging that decision. The tour leader will provide the appropriate form on Day One of your trip.
Trip cancellation insurance is not mandatory, but Intrepid recommends it.Whether you purchase it is entirely up to you.
Intrepid also recommends choosing a policy that covers trip interruption or curtailment, lost or delayed baggage, and personal liability.
Before the trip begins, your Intrepid tour leader will ask to see proof of your insurance policy and your insurer’s 24-hour emergency assistance number.

Intrepid will share the specific cancellation terms when you book your trip, as these can vary slightly depending on the adventure.
In most cases, a $400 deposit is required at the time of booking, with the remaining balance due 70–90 days before departure.
If something comes up and you need to cancel before making your final payment, that $400 deposit can usually be applied toward another Intrepid adventure — so it doesn’t have to go to waste.
Once full payment has been made, trips are generally non-refundable.
You will be staying in a permanent tented camp in the Serengeti National Park, with no barriers between you and the animals. This is amazing, but it's important to heed the safety advice of your leader.
Intrepid is committed to ensuring that all its trips are safe for everyone involved, including travelers, local leaders, and the communities they visit.
Their health and safety policies align with recommendations from the World Health Organization and the World Travel & Tourism Council's Safe Travel protocols for tour operators.
Each itinerary undergoes a thorough risk assessment and audit, and both leaders and suppliers complete extensive health and safety training.
Travellers must be in good physical health to participate fully in this adventure.
Please read the itinerary carefully and assess your ability to manage and enjoy the activities and travel conditions. If you’re unwell before departure, please stay home and contact Intrepid to discuss alternative arrangements.
If your local leader or representative determines that continuing would pose an undue risk to you or others, Intrepid reserves the right to exclude you from all or part of the trip without a refund.
Consult your doctor or a travel health clinic well before departure about vaccinations, medications, and other precautions.
Bring a basic first aid kit and personal medications in their original packaging, as these may be difficult to obtain locally.
Check your government’s travel advice for any restrictions on bringing medications into the countries you’ll visit.
Yellow fever
Some countries require an international yellow fever vaccination certificate when you arrive from or transit through a country with a risk of yellow fever. You may be asked to present it at an airport or border crossing, and entry may be refused without it.
Check the requirements for your full itinerary, including transit stops and your return journey, and discuss vaccination with your doctor well before departure.
Malaria and dengue
Malaria and dengue are mosquito-borne illnesses found in parts of Africa. Discuss your itinerary with your doctor and check current government travel health advice. Your doctor can advise whether malaria prevention medication is appropriate.
Reduce your risk of mosquito bites by using insect repellent and wearing long, loose, light-coloured clothing. Symptoms can include fever, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue. Dengue may also cause severe joint pain, nausea, and a rash.
If you develop a fever or other concerning symptoms during your trip or after returning home, seek medical attention promptly and tell the healthcare provider where you travelled.
Drinking water
Avoid tap water unless it has been confirmed safe to drink. Use safe drinking water provided by your hotel or lodge, sealed bottled water, or appropriately treated water.
Drink regularly throughout the day, especially in hot weather. Bring oral rehydration salts and ask your pharmacist about suitable medication for motion sickness or diarrhoea.
Tsetse flies
Avoid dark blue and black clothing while on safari, as these colours can attract biting tsetse flies. Light, neutral colours are a better choice.
Mpox
Check current government travel health advice before departure, as outbreaks and entry requirements can change. Avoid close skin-to-skin contact with anyone who has symptoms and avoid sharing potentially contaminated items, such as towels or bedding.
Wash your hands regularly and seek medical advice if you develop an unexplained rash or other concerning symptoms.
