People love food almost as much as they love each other. There is nothing that brings more happiness and joy than sharing a table with the people you love. This is a common thread in cultures all around the world.

No matter where we come from, food has always been a way for people to gather, connect, and celebrate life together. Across continents and generations, families sit down at tables, share stories, pass down traditions, and strengthen the bonds that hold them together.

Whether it is a holiday feast, a simple family dinner, or a meal shared among friends, the act of eating together creates a sense of belonging that transcends language, borders, and backgrounds.

My understanding of this connection through food began early in my life, though I didn’t fully realize it at the time.

My family immigrated to Canada when I was three years old, and for most of my childhood, I believed our little family of six—my parents and my three siblings—were all we had. Until I was thirteen, it felt as though we were our own small island.

Family meals, holidays, and celebrations were always just the six of us. Those moments were warm and loving, but our world felt small and contained within our immediate family. Being new to Canada, our family had yet to build a community.

Then, when I was thirteen, we moved back to the UK. Suddenly, my world opened up. I met extended family members I had never known—grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. People who had always been part of my family, yet were strangers to me. Almost overnight, I experienced something new: the feeling of belonging to something much larger than myself.

Meals suddenly became something different. Sitting around the table with this newly discovered family created a connection that I had never experienced before. Over those meals, I began to understand my place within a much bigger family story. Food became the thread that wove us together.

Later in life, when I married and had a family of my own, this tradition stayed with me. Creating opportunities for people to gather around the table became something very important to me. Holidays, birthdays, and special occasions became moments for us to reconnect, share stories, and catch up on each other’s lives.

It was not unusual for twenty or more people—family and friends—to gather around our table. The house would be full, the kitchen busy, and the table overflowing with food. But more than anything, it was filled with conversation, laughter, and connection.

There are many meaningful benefits that come from sharing a meal together.

It helps us stay connected and gives us a safe space to talk about our days—our ups and downs, our fears and anxieties, or the things that bring us joy and success. When we share a meal, it becomes a natural way to maintain our relationships and sometimes gently open the door to new ones.

With the world becoming such a global community, we now have the opportunity to experience food from cultures all around the world. There are few things more inviting than trying the local cuisine when exploring a new country. Culture is a big part of food, and food is a big part of culture. Whether we are eating traditional dishes or taking a cooking class while traveling, we gain a deeper awareness of each other’s cultural backgrounds and traditions.

Sharing meals with the people we love can even contribute to a longer life because it strengthens our connection with family and community. While cooking with someone you love or sitting down to share a meal may seem small in the grand scheme of life, these moments are powerful in supporting our mental and emotional well-being.

Food nourishes our bodies, but sharing food nourishes our souls. Sometimes all we need is a simple meal and the comfort of good company to help lighten the troubles of life.

And when we gather around the table, we are doing something timeless—continuing a tradition of connection, belonging, and love that has brought people together for generations.

And so my Sole Sisters, as you Ramble out into your week, may you find comfort, joy, laughter, and connection around the table with family, friends, and new acquaintances.

Eating is so intimate. It’s very sensual.

When you invite someone to sit at your table
and you want to cook for them, you’re inviting
a person into your life – Maya Angelou

“I believe that food is one way to make people happy.
I also believe that food can unite people from all walks
of life and cultures. When we sit together and eat,
we promote better understanding and harmony.
