Helen’s Menopause Moustache — Dear Sole Sisters

The Dear Sole Sisters advice column is a place where women can ask questions and get advice from the women of the Sole Sister Ramblers community.

Dear Sole Sisters,

Okay, ladies, what are we doing about the dreaded menopause moustache?

I feel like I’ve tried everything! Hair-removal creams irritate my skin, waxing makes me break out, and shaving feels like a never-ending commitment. Just when I think I’ve dealt with it, another stubborn hair appears—usually somewhere it definitely wasn’t the day before!

I’m now considering electrolysis, but does it actually work? Is it painful? How many treatments does it take, and is it worth the money? What about laser hair removal or one of those little facial-hair-removal gadgets?

I know facial hair is a perfectly normal part of menopause, but I’m tired of conducting daily chin inspections under the bathroom light!

Have any of my wise Sole Sisters found something that actually works?

What’s a gal to do?

Sincerely,
Hairy Helen

  • I have tweezers everywhere. In my purse, a set in the car, and of course in the bathroom and my vanity area. Tweezers are my friend

  • Electrolysis works well on the chin, and is very effective. It requires several ongoing sessions, but it's eventually permanent. The upper lip area is more sensitive/painful as someone else mentioned.

  • Try threading

  • I occasionally do electrolysis to groom new hairs that crop up. It works, but it’s a battle!

  • Helen, try laser treatment that is the best. Laser treatments are more sophisticated than it used to be. I am glad you are considering doing something about it.

  • I had 8 sessions of laser about a year and a half ago. Only one hair has creeped back.

  • I did electrolysis about 5 years ago specifically for a spot on my chin with stubborn hairs. It worked amazingly but was a bit painful. Now I use a little shaver called The Frankie from Bushbalm on my under the chin area, lip area and the soft fluff on my cheek line. So easy and painless.

  • Laser only works on dark hair, electroliysy works on light hair as well, it is somewhat painful, it is expensive, i had over a years treatment, pretty successful, still the odd hair

  • Just shave when you shower
