Born in Montreal and now calling North Vancouver home, Tara Ticehurst is both an artist and a bookkeeper, equally grounded and imaginative. She finds joy in pushing her physical limits, fostering friendships, and seeking out new paths to explore.
What do you love most about Rambling?
I love the feelings I get after a Ramble: my body’s reaction to pushing my physical limits, and the fulfilment of my need for connection and friendship.
What is the best part about being your age?
The best part about being my age is that I don’t actually feel as old as I am. I enjoy the freedom from the responsibilities of raising children and the financial pressures I once carried.
What five words would you use to describe yourself?
I’m grounded and worldly. I’m quirky and conventional. I’m literally an artist and a bookkeeper.
What do you most like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I create art and walk my dogs. I love planning routes and leading rambles, as well as dreaming up trips—some I eventually take, and others remain wonderful daydreams.
What was your first job?
My first job was picking and selling corn at a roadside stand in the Eastern Townships of Quebec.
What is your favorite color, and where does this show up?
I love purple. I painted my bedroom purple, and there’s always a touch of purple in my artwork. I also wear purple often—though I’m never quite sure if I’m old enough to be “practicing” Jenny Joseph’s famous poem Warning, or if I’m simply embracing the joy of the color.
Where is your favorite place to Ramble, and why do you love it?
My favorite place to Ramble? It’s a toss-up between the coastal trails around Vancouver, where I can look up at the mountains, and the mountain trails, where I can look down at the coast. Either way, the views are always spectacular.
