Nurturing Mental Wellbeing - Jane's Mindful Musings

Jane Witherspoon is a Canadian expat adventurer, yoga instructor, and passionate rambler who recently relocated from Panama to Denia, Spain.

We humans are intimately connected to this planet we call home. Our lives are ever-changing, and changes sometimes impact our mental health. Some of us struggle with seasonal blues, especially those living in northern climes.

Along with these triggers are the inevitable stresses of being connected to the rest of humanity. Recent events like the pandemic, wars, and climate disasters are promoting emotional rollercoasters. So, how do we grapple with events outside our control and keep ourselves mentally happy and well?

Our mental health affects how we live, impacting how we feel, move, and behave daily. It impacts our ability to deal with stress, overcome life's challenges, build relationships, and overcome setbacks.

Like physical wellness, we need to take the time to care for our emotional well-being.

I am not a mental health professional, but these are some of the ways I check in when I'm struggling emotionally, feeling down, or am overwhelmed.

Meditation

There are many forms of meditation to choose from, including seated, guided audio, walking, and meditation while connecting with nature. It is all about allowing yourself the space to connect with your thoughts and feelings.

Be Active

This is easier said than done, for me anyway when I feel out of sorts. But getting myself up and out inevitably makes me feel better mentally. My go-to solutions are getting onto my yoga mat and doing a restorative practice or getting outside to walk.

Eat Well

How many of you reach for comfort food when feeling down? I will always choose chocolate and potato chips over healthy options. Although we may find comfort in these foods, they can lead to more fatigue, significant mood fluctuations, and more concentration issues.

Talk About Your Feelings

I do not share readily and tend to withdraw when troubled. Still, I find it cathartic when I finally reach out and share my feelings. Whether it be my husband, daughters, or girlfriend, I know I am loved and supported even when I am not "happy."

Be Kind

Finally and most importantly, be kind to yourself. Allow your inner voice to be supportive and warm, and practice self-compassion, especially when it feels like it has abandoned you.

And so, my Sole Sisters, as you ramble through your week, I hope you all find time to connect with your inner thoughts and feelings and remember to be kind to yourselves.

Be confused, it is where you begin to learn new things
Be broken, it is where you begin to heal

Be frustrated, it is where you begin to make more authentic decisions
Be sad, because if we are brave enough we can heart our heart’s wisdom through it
Be whatever you are right now.
No more hiding.
You are worthy, always - S.C. Lourie
