This column is usually dedicated to things I like and recommend, but today is slightly different.
I am someone who gets distracted by nonsense. I find it almost impossible to ignore plotlines that don't make sense. I can even feel a bit offended by the laziness of writers and directors who don't give their audience the credit it deserves by taking the time and attention necessary to make a story credible. Ok, I can hear you from here, "Just go with the flow, Nomi."
I was at my cottage last week with friends. It was an unusually cold week for the end of August, so after roasting marshmallows around the fire pit, we decided to go inside and find an entertaining show to binge. One of the top 10 recommended was Who Is Erin Carter? (Netflix). Although it didn't rate highly on Rotten Tomatoes, we decided to try it.
This action-packed seven episode series gets you going right from the beginning. It has you wondering who Erin Carter is almost immediately. The acting is decent, especially Erin's daughter Harper (Indica Watson) and Erin (Evin Ahmad), and the scenery around Barcelona is stunning.
But you have to suspend credibility expectations as you see Erin survive multiple shootings, stabbings, and fights to the death that no actual person could ever live through, let alone get up, dust themselves off, and go back to work as though nothing has happened.
For me, this is where the problem lies. Although the show was exciting, entertaining, and binge-worthy, I simply could not get past the issue of its ridiculousness. I still have no clear idea of who Erin Carter is, and I have no idea how she could still be married to her sainted husband or still be alive, for that matter!
You could dive into this show with the attitude that it's like a female version of a James Bond movie, with all of the kick-ass action that genre entails, and you'll probably like it. But if that is not your thing, and you're more like me and can't chill out about the inconsistencies and the suspension of reality, give it a miss.
I would love to hear what you think!
