Ginny and Georgia (TV Series) - Nomi's Pics

Naomi Weisman is a Canadian-Australian and mother of three who loves to ramble with her dog, cook for family and friends, and laugh whenever possible.

The news these days has been overwhelming. It has been difficult to escape the violence and the sadness that permeates each day on our news feeds and our televisions.

So, in an effort to lighten my mental and emotional load, I scrolled through the Netflix selections and stumbled upon what looked to be a light comedy and dove in!

Ginny and Georgia is about a single mom and her teenage daughter. The first episode introduces us to the characters' back stories and their relationships, and it interested me enough to watch a second episode, but it didn’t blow me away.

By the end of the second episode, with a few plot twists, I was hooked! This show delves into topics I wasn’t expecting, as I thought it would just be a mother/daughter situation comedy.

In addition to the cute, angsty teen stuff, it deals with overt and ingrained racism, sexual identity, instances of self-harm, deep depression, the repercussions of divorce, and the dark deeds people can sometimes be forced into when faced with no alternative.

The acting in this series is exceptional. Especially Felix Mallard. His portrayal of Marcus Baker is masterful. We feel his love, sadness, and the darkness he falls into with such intensity.

Antonia Gentry, who plays Ginny, is such a talented actress. Not only do we feel her teenage angst, but she also fleshes out how her childhood has affected her life as a maturing biracial 16-year-old.  She is utterly believable in the role.

Brianne Howey, as Georgia, executes her role to perfection. She is at times overly confident but prone to anxiety attacks, as well as loveable but very irritating at others. Her complexity as a person makes her so fascinating to watch.

Nathan Mitchell, who plays Zion Miller (Ginny’s father), is the one actor that falls short of impressive for me. He is lovely to look at, but that’s about it.

Did I find the relaxing, shallow escape from the daily barrage of bad news I was looking for? Yes and no. Ginny and Georgia is immersive and enjoyable. It takes us on a journey to some pretty dark places at times but is representative of real-life experiences.

I recommend this show to anyone looking to escape with quality writing and acting. Also, for all of you Canadians and Australians, check out how many of the actors are from your shores!

I hear that there will be a third season. Yeah!
