Boy Swallows Universe (TV Series) - Nomi's Pics

Naomi Weisman is a Canadian-Australian and mother of three who loves to ramble with her dog, cook for family and friends, and laugh whenever possible.

Warning, this show has scenes of domestic abuse.

My bio mom, Helen, strikes again! This time with an Australian series based on a book written by Trent Dalton of the same title. Helen has a knack for knowing what I like to watch, read, or listen to, and she nailed it with this suggestion.

Set in 1983 Brisbane, Boy Swallows Universe is loosely based on a true story about a family in absolute strife. The main protagonists are Eli Bell and his older brother Gus, who grapple with a childhood filled with drugs, crime, and abandonment but also with love.

Filled with A-list veteran Australian actors like Bryan Brown, Anthony LaPaglia, and Simon Baker, who each bring magnetism and heart to their characters; however, nobody shines brighter than Felix Cameron (Eli) and Lee Halley (Gus). These two young actors bring a spark of scrappy innocence mixed with defiant resilience to their characters that will leave you in wonder.

This series is quirky in the sense that it uses mystical realism to tell its story. When watching it, it is necessary for the viewer to suspend realistic expectations and go with the show’s cosmic flow. It is a beautiful adventure, filled with the raw power of brotherly love, that will make you laugh, cry, cringe, and smile.

I highly recommend Boy Swallows Universe and would love to know what you think of it. I plan on reading the book while I’m away in Australia, so if you’ve got a review of that, I’m all ears!
