Purpose with Passion- Doane Music School - Jane Chapman

Montreal-born Jane Chapman, a former creative director and lover of the arts, lives an active life in Toronto, Canada, with her husband. Her guiding forces are curiosity and an open heart and mind.

Since joining the Sole Sister Ramblers community, I have read many inspirational posts about women in midlife finding a purpose. So, I thought I’d share what has been one of my passions for the last 14 years since retiring from a career as a Creative Director in marketing.

In 2009, I learned that Melanie Doane, the recording and musical theatre artist, had recently initiated a ukulele program in her kids' school to provide them with the same rich music experience she had growing up in Halifax.

Her goal was and still is to make learning music accessible to all kids. Thanks to her charity, Doane Music School, every student is offered free or 'pay-what-you-can' weekly lessons in their schools and communities.

What started as one hundred kids in a few schools has now grown to 1250 kids learning music across Toronto, with pilot programs in Halifax and the Yukon. Last year, we were part of over 60 concerts in our students' schools. I brought Melanie's program to the school my children attended in 2010, and thanks to support from our Parent Council, every Gr. 3 student since has learned to play an instrument and sing together for free.

The impact of the Doane Music School extends far beyond the classroom walls. Students have had the privilege of collaborating with renowned artists such as Jann Arden, Molly Johnson, and the Barenaked Ladies, showcasing their talents on esteemed stages like Massey Hall and Koerner Hall. These experiences not only validate their hard work but also inspire them to dream bigger and aim higher.

One of the highlights of the school year is Uke Day, a grand gathering that brings together hundreds of students from across the city. This event not only celebrates their musical achievements but also features performances from special guests like Ron Sexsmith, Grace VanderWaal, and ukulele virtuoso James Hill. It’s a day where the community comes together to revel in the joy and camaraderie that music brings.

As the world navigates uncertain times, the importance of initiatives like the Doane Music School becomes even more pronounced. Beyond teaching musical skills, the school nurtures resilience, teamwork, and emotional well-being among children, preparing them to face life’s challenges with confidence and grace.

I've been involved in growing Doane Music School, learned to play the ukulele as a weekly classroom volunteer, and currently raise money and awareness as Board Chair. All this is to say that I lucked into finding something meaningful to devote my time to that has given me so much in return. I feel so fortunate that our charity is able to give all of its benefits to so many.
