The genesis of The Morning Show fascinates me. It was born from the Me Too movement and the fallout in its aftermath within the television industry. It feels like a show designed for our turbulent and changing times.
Reese Witherspoon has been involved in many relevant projects of late that focus on women’s issues in the workplace and society, like Big Little Lies, The Last Thing He Told Me, Daisy Jones and the Six, and Little Fires Everywhere. These series tell stories about women’s struggles, triumphs, and strength through adversity from the female perspective.
Each season of The Morning Show is star-studded. Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Billy Crudup are the mainstay cast members that anchor the series (pun intended), but each season has its own host of stars like Steve Carell, Jon Hamm, Marcia Gay Harden, Julianna Margulies, and Martin Short.
Not only does this show deal with workplace ethics and cultures of complicity, but it also focuses on the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 and the storming of the US Capitol building on January 6, 2021, all from the viewpoint of a media news outlet.
I cannot say that it's the best example of writing and acting I’ve ever seen, but despite its flaws, it has something magnetic about it. It has kept me returning for more, and I look forward to Season 4, especially after that cliffhanger!
