Conclave (Movie)- Nomi's Pics

Naomi Weisman is a Canadian-Australian and mother of three who loves to ramble with her dog, cook for family and friends, and laugh whenever possible.

I’m a self-described homebody, but every now and then, I enjoy a trip to the theatre. So, when my partner Brian asked me what I’d like to do for Valentine’s Day, I suggested Conclave in the comfy VIP chairs at the cinema!

Well, I didn’t get the VIP chairs, but I did get to see the film—and what a stellar cast it has! Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci, and Isabella Rossellini, among many other talented actors from around the world, bring the story to life in a way that feels both intimate and epic. Set against the backdrop of the Vatican, Conclave offers a gripping, tension-filled experience as the cardinals convene to elect a new pope following the sudden death of the previous pontiff.

From the very first moments, Conclave immerses you in its world of high-stakes politics and religious intrigue. The narrative revolves around the secretive gathering of cardinals locked away in the Sistine Chapel as they navigate their personal ambitions, loyalties, and the weighty responsibility of selecting the next leader of the Catholic Church.

What I truly appreciated about this film was how it blended historical authenticity with a thrilling, almost suspenseful atmosphere. It provides a fascinating, behind-the-scenes glimpse into one of the world’s most mysterious and powerful institutions while never shying away from the moral and political dilemmas the cardinals face.

The cast delivers stellar performances across the board, each actor bringing depth and complexity to their role. The dynamic between the characters, as they subtly jockey for influence, adds a compelling layer to the drama. It’s easy to get lost in their personal struggles and conflicting visions for the future of the church, and the acting elevates every moment. The performances make you feel like you’re witnessing history unfold right before your eyes.

Isabella Rossellini deserves special mention for her supporting role as Sister Agnes. Her facial expressions alone stole a few scenes, conveying so much with a glance or a subtle gesture. Carlos Diez as Father Vincent Benítez is truly wonderful. He brings a quiet yet powerful strength to his character. His subtle performance added another layer of depth to the film’s complex moral landscape.

The cinematography is equally impressive, beautifully capturing the grandeur and secrecy of the Vatican. The pacing of the film keeps the tension high throughout, as each moment feels charged with anticipation. The film’s direction strikes a perfect balance, never resorting to melodrama but instead opting for a thoughtful, cerebral approach that keeps you fully engaged.

Conclave is a brilliantly crafted film—intelligent, tense, and emotionally resonant. It’s a perfect mix of historical drama, political intrigue, and suspense, with incredible performances and a thought-provoking premise. If you enjoy historical thrillers or political dramas, this is one you won’t want to miss. It made for an unforgettable Valentine’s Day outing!

My Favorite quotes from the movie:

  • Lawrence: "Our faith is a living thing precisely because it walks hand-in-hand with doubt. If there was only certainty and no doubt, there would be no mystery. And therefore no need for faith. Let us pray that God will grant us a Pope who doubts. And let him grant us a Pope who sins and asks for forgiveness and who carries on."
  • Sister Agnes: "Although we sisters are supposed to be invisible, God has nevertheless given us eyes and ears."
