Maestro (Movie) - Nomi's Pics

Naomi Weisman is a Canadian-Australian and mother of three who loves to ramble with her dog, cook for family and friends, and laugh whenever possible.

Bradley Cooper rose to fame for his appeal to “bro” culture in 2005 with a supporting role in Wedding Crashers but really became a household name with the Hangover trilogy in 2009-2013.

Over the past decade or so, he has evolved from a frat-house humor screen idol into an impressive movie-making actor/producer/director of noteworthy proportions with Silver Lining Playbook (2012), Burnt (2015), A Star is Born (2018), and now Maestro

Those of us who grew up in the second half of the 20th Century have at least heard of Leonard Bernstein. Even if you are not a classical music enthusiast, you will undoubtedly be familiar with at least a couple of his compositions, like those in West Side Story or On the Waterfront. I was completely unaware of Bernstein’s personality or personal life.

Maestro reveals the many layers of the brilliant composer, conductor, musician, and American cultural icon in ways that are heartfelt, honest, and breathtaking. It is apparent from the outset that Cooper has a deep respect for Bernstein's genius and a fascination with what made him tick as a man, a husband, a father, and a friend. Cooper’s portrayal is a masterclass in character transformation.

In equal measure, Carey Mulligan’s portrayal of Felicia Montealegre is nothing short of amazing. She transcends the traditional supporting role of “wife” and has the audience spellbound by her intricately nuanced performance.

I was lucky enough to have seen this film in the theatre. Hearing this incredible soundtrack in surround sound and seeing Cooper become Bernstein so totally was an experience to remember.

Keep your eye out for three scenes in particular: A poignant moment between Bernstein and his daughter, a truthful exchange between Felicia and Leonard, and the Maestro himself conducting an orchestra that will leave you slack-jawed with amazement and slightly exhausted.

Well done, Mr. Cooper. You are no longer just a "bro," and it is a pleasure to watch what you create.

Let me know what you think of the film in the comments!
