Etgar Keret, Half-baked Stories About My Dead Mom

Half-Baked Stories About My Dead Mom (Podcast) - Nomi’s Pics

Naomi Weisman is a Canadian, Australian and mother of three, who loves to ramble with her dog, cook for family and friends, and laugh whenever possible.

As some of you know, I am not a podcast enthusiast, but that fact might be changing.

This week my real-life sister and fellow Sole Sister Rambler Amy Horne, who knows of my passion for Holocaust survivor stories, sent me this podcast to listen to.

It is an interview with an Israeli writer Etgar Keret about his memories of his mother, Orna Keret on a podcast called This American Life

As a prolific author of short stories, graphic novels, and scripts for movies and television, Etgar describes how difficult it has been to write stories about his mother, who was also a wonderful storyteller. At face value, she would tell stories that would seem pretty scary to a kid, but Etgar relays them with humor and heart.

What I found so captivating in this interview was his description of how his mother learned the art of storytelling from her parents; they would make stories up on the spot at bedtime, and Orna would struggle to stay awake so that she could hear how it ended, knowing that it was not written down.

Orna was a little girl when the Nazis invaded Poland. She had vivid memories of her mom, dad, and baby brother on the run and hiding in the forest. She remembers her mother as an honest, loving, and courageous person whom she exemplified in her own life.

I can understand why Etgar, until now, has been unable to encapsulate such a woman into words. I am sure he would not want to depict her in anything but a multidimensional way. In this podcast, in his humorous and loving way, he brings to life a woman I now feel like I know, a person I somehow miss and long to see again.

If you listen to podcasts, don’t miss this one. It will make you laugh, cry, and everything in between.
