Where did you grow up, and what did you like or dislike about that place?
I grew up on Air Force bases, which mostly positively affected me. We traveled in Europe, camping in big old tents and met many people from other countries. I loved that then and still do.
I didn't particularly appreciate moving away from my friends every four years, but I adjusted, and often, some of them would show up at the next posting.
Do you like to travel?
I have itchy traveling feet, but I like having a home base.
What are some of the best things about you?
As a result of growing up in a military household, I am very punctual. You can count on me to be on time.
I love adventure and plan trips whenever I can. I'm very committed to my friends and family and go out of my way to keep in touch.
My daughters say that I am generous with time and money.
I stay active and walk every day. Sometimes, it is only at work as I am a deckhand on BC Ferries, but I get out there.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I read a lot of fiction, and the list of authors I like is numerous. Some of my favorites are Elizabeth George, Peter Robinson, Louise Penny, and Peter May.
I also love to cook, mainly vegetarian dishes.
I love to kayak and worked as a kayak guide in Salt Spring Island for several years.
And most of all, I love to hike. I crave the smell, sights, and sounds of forests and sometimes cities, especially if they're new to me. I find fall and spring to be exceedingly joyful.
What is the bravest thing you've ever done?
The bravest thing I have ever done was travel alone to Guatemala and Honduras in 2001. I spent two and a half months exploring these two countries, which was scary, exciting, and enlightening. I'm so glad that I made that trip.
What are you looking forward to?
At 68, and I'm feeling terrific. I'm retiring soon, and I'm still in good health. My partner and I hope to travel more. I'm excited to spend more time with my daughters ( I have 3) and grandchildren (I have 5). I'm the gramma that takes her grandchildren swimming, skating, and hiking. This is a great age to be.
