Sunscreen - Rambling Style Files

Rambling essentials from fashion to recipes to gear and everything in between. Style Files is the creation of Jill Cohen Morris, an avid rambler and mother of two from Toronto, Canada, with a remarkable zest for life, a fabulous sense of humor, and remarkable style (of course).

Hey, Sole Sisters!

It’s time for my Rambling Style Files, where I discuss all things rambling, from fashion to recipes to gear and everything in between.

As ramblers, we are often outside. What does that mean? We need to protect our skin!! We all grew up in an age when sun worshipping was a way of life. Remember those goggles that barely covered your eyes with little pinholes and the tanning foil reflectors? What were we thinking?

I vividly remember, while backpacking through Europe in my early 20s, being on a ferry on my way to Santorini, Greece, and being so burnt I was covered in blisters, feverish, and shaking uncontrollably… all in hopes of turning the burn into a glowy tan (which by the way never happened).

Gone are those days … thank goodness!! If only I could go back in time and warn my younger self about the dangers of skin cancer.

I now wear sunscreen 365 days a year, doing my best to protect my skin. I love wearing bucket hats, not only because I think I look cute in them but also because I love the sun protection they provide.

In my opinion, a bucket hat is much better than a baseball hat because a bucket hat’s all-around brim gives you more coverage. Whatever style you like, look for a hat with UV protection.

Let’s talk sunscreen. I am not a doctor, nor am I a sunscreen expert. I am, however, a freckled, fair-skinned burn magnet, outdoor lover, and sunscreen wearer.

There are two types of sunscreen: chemical and mineral. The key difference between these types of sunscreen is how they block rays. Mineral sunscreens sit on the surface of your skin and act as a shield, while chemical sunscreens sink into your skin and act more like a sponge. Both have pros and cons.

Here is a good article I found about the differences between chemical and mineral sunscreens

I prefer chemical sunscreens because they are more water and sweat-resistant, making them great for my active lifestyle. If you wear a chemical sunscreen, just remember to allow 15-30 minutes for it to absorb into the skin.

I use two different sunscreens: a cream for my face and a spray for my body. One of my biggest pet peeves is the burning feeling when sunscreen gets in my eyes.

I use SuperGoop. It is a little more expensive, but it is my face after all!! It is super sheer, waterproof and my eyes don’t burn.

I’m not picky about my body; I use an easy-to-apply waterproof spray with a high SPF, whatever is readily available at my local drugstore.

Then there are tinted sunscreens, which I love. I have a lot of red in my skin, and the tint evens out my skin tones. I love a healthy, golden, glowy look.

I only use this on my face although I know tinted body sunscreen does exist. The brand I like is EltaMD. If you wear a skin tint as part of your daily routine which does not contain SPF you can just mix in a little sunscreen and then apply.

CeraVe sunscreen was highly recommended to me, but I have yet to try it. It's chemical-free, doesn’t burn your eyes, and has a good price point. Sounds like a win-win!! The downfall for me is it is not waterproof.

If you decide to use a moisturizer with SPF as a sunscreen, ensure it has at least 30 SPF. From my research, anything less in a moisturizer will not act as a sunscreen.

Do you have a favorite sunscreen? Chemical? Mineral? Tinted? What’s your go-to?

Bottom line .. whatever you decide please PROTECT your SKIN!!!!

Happy Rambling!!
