Best Grab and Go Snack - Rambling Style Files

Rambling essentials from fashion to recipes to gear and everything in between. Style Files is the creation of Jill Cohen Morris, an avid rambler and mother of two from Toronto, Canada, with a zest for life, a fabulous sense of humor, and remarkable style (of course).

Hey, Sole Sisters! It's time for my rambling style files, where I discuss all things rambling, from fashion to recipes to gear and everything in between.

Who else gets hungry in the late afternoon? After years of battling, I finally have my late-night eating under control. There are no tips or tricks, just some good old-fashioned willpower. Actually, one tip … I stay out of the kitchen.

I made a conscious decision not to put anything in my mouth after I walk the dog at night. The first week was tough, but like anything, I got into a groove, and now the urge is gone. Don’t get me wrong; I am not perfect, but I am perfect enough for me.

Let’s talk afternoon binging. I get really hungry in the afternoon, especially post-ramble or pickleball. Honestly, I could eat everything in sight. I’m famished.

What I have learned is that being prepared is half the battle. I started with cut-up veggies, but that just didn't do the trick. I love vegetables, but they are not so satisfying at 4 p.m. I added some hummus, and that certainly helped; however, I could easily devour a whole tub of hummus.

I have a smoothie in the morning, which I find so filling, but I don’t need or want to have another one. Truthfully, I was searching for something grab-and-go that feels like a treat.

Remember Turtles? Oh, were they delicious!! A Canadian staple!!

I call my version Healthy Turtles. They hit all my needs: They satiate my hunger, stop my sugar cravings, and don’t leave me feeling deprived. They can also be easily made for grab-and-go.

Here's the recipe . . .

Healthy Turtles

Ingredients:

  • Medjool dates
  • Crunchy peanut butter
  • Melted chocolate

Method:

  • Cut dates in half
  • Stuff with peanut butter
  • Dip in melted chocolate
  • Chill in the freezer on a tray with parchment paper

You can use any type of chocolate. I like dark, low-sugar chocolate. I use crunchy peanut butter but feel free to use your nut butter of choice. I buy pitted dates, which are easier to manage. Add nuts or flaky salt to the top for crunchiness.

Full disclosure: This is not my recipe. There are a million variations on Instagram, TikTok, etc. This got me thinking, though: Why stop at dates? I had a little fun in the kitchen with strawberries, oranges, and bananas. Honestly, the possibilities are endless.

My favorite so far is… I don’t have one. I love them all!! Do you have a favorite?

The bottom line is that I’m just happy to have an easy, go-to snack that hits all my post-rambling boxes.

Happy Rambling!!
